Since I started selling "vintage art" way back before it was even a trend in 2013 there has been an explosion of vintage art sellers online. It's become trendy to offer advice and for some reason I've been seeing a LOT of posts lately about how to clean paintings. Much to my horror there are many well meaning but not so great recommendations being made. Here is my number one rule and it's simple: ONLY USE A FEATHER DUSTER! Please do not use a "soft cloth" or microfiber cloth. Paint becomes brittle with time and a gentle clean with a cloth could lift or snap that paint right off especially if the paint is applied thickly (impasto is the correct term. You've probably read it a million times in my painting descriptions). Also, avoid water, any liquids or soaps unless you absolutely know what you're doing. Remember oil and water doesn't mix. It may turn out ok but I wouldn't risk it. And once you start cleaning you can't stop. A painting ...

 Fab Moody Mid Century Seascape by Einar Emland I can't believe this hasn't been snapped up yet! A fantastic moody expressionist seascape oil painting by, Swedish painter and listed artist, Einar Emland. E Emland studied painting with Jules Schyl at Tekniska Skolan, and with Wilhelm Grüttrud in Oslo, with Rostrup Bøyesen in Copenhagen and at Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris 1946-1951.    Emland liked to depict everyday people and happenings and believed that art should available to everyone not just the wealthy.  Emland was a very productive painter other depicting faceless figures, landscapes and still lifes. Mid Century Mixed Media Art from Sweden by Hugo Wickman 1959 Click Here For More Information or to Purchase SOLD  Super mod mid century mixed media piece by Cat Steven's uncle Hugo Wickman. Cat's mother was from Sweden so he spent some time here as a child. He credits his Uncle Hugo as a creative inspiration in this article from the English language newspaper in Sweden, The Local.  Mid Century mixed media artwork by Hugo Wickman (1904-1962) from 1959. Interesting use of materials with pleasing color harmonies and composition. Wickman is represented in several museum collections in Sweden and was the uncle of 1970's icon Cat Stevens. Original Mid Century Self Portrait Oil Painting by Wanda L from Sweden Click Here for More Information or to Purchase SOLD  I absolutely love finding portraits and this one was quite a find. I think it is the first self portrait I've found. The signature is Wanda L and dated 1961. It's actually a double self portrait of the artist painting herself. The time period is well captured with her mod haircut and striped shirt. The colors are clear and harmonious and there is a certain strength to the composition. You can tell Wanda L was a very confident artist. I am not sure Wanda was from Sweden. Wow! At first I almost dismissed this painting, but then I caught a glimpse of it again out of the corner of my eye and saw it's beauty. The subtle and very atmospheric background with it's glowing lights really are beautifully rendered. The painting has such wonderful depth. Sometimes you find a painting that will make you gasp aloud. This was one of them for me. I couldn't believe it hadn't been already snapped up. I wish I was better at photography because my photography never does these forgotten masterpieces justice. Oil on newspaper applied to board. Great painting of boats beached on a stormy shore. Thickly applied paint in beautiful tonal blues ranging from aqua to grey. Carl Berendtsson studied at the Royal Art Academy in Stockholm and worked both in Europe in Scandinavia. His earliest work shows the influence of French post-impressionism but later works became increasingly more modern in appearance, often reducing scenes to a few simple shapes. He must have had some international success as a painter as I see references to him on international art sights and his paintings are listed at much higher rates. Measures 39cm high x 51cm wide. Venice by Knut Norman Sweden Click  Here  to buy or read more about this painting on Etsy SOLD This painting is filled with light and breath taking in person. What a talented painter Knut Norman was.  I see his paintings here and there is Sweden and am surprised he isn't more well known. I read somewhere online, or actually in a couple of place, that his studies were financed by Anders Zorn, one of Sweden's most loved and successful painters. It's something I am guilty of too. But, when I find a piece like this, obviously painted with a skillfull hand, I feel frustrated not being able to put a name to it. Maybe it just adds to the intrigue of this piece.  On the back it says "Cliffs at Starndhagen- Arild". Arild is a coastal town about 30km above Helsingborg that attracts artists by the droves for its scenic views and many plein air painting opportunities. SOLD
