Wow! At first I almost dismissed this painting, but then I caught a glimpse of it again out of the corner of my eye and saw it's beauty. The subtle and very atmospheric background with it's glowing lights really are beautifully rendered. The painting has such wonderful depth. Sometimes you find a painting that will make you gasp aloud. This was one of them for me. I couldn't believe it hadn't been already snapped up. I wish I was better at photography because my photography never does these forgotten masterpieces justice. Oil on newspaper applied to board. Great painting of boats beached on a stormy shore. Thickly applied paint in beautiful tonal blues ranging from aqua to grey. Carl Berendtsson studied at the Royal Art Academy in Stockholm and worked both in Europe in Scandinavia. His earliest work shows the influence of French post-impressionism but later works became increasingly more modern in appearance, often reducing scenes to a few simple shapes. He must have had some international success as a painter as I see references to him on international art sights and his paintings are listed at much higher rates. Measures 39cm high x 51cm wide. What a talented painter Knut Norman was.  I see his paintings here and there is Sweden and am surprised he isn't more well known. I read somewhere online, or actually in a couple of place, that his studies were financed by Anders Zorn, one of Sweden's most loved and successful painters. It's something I am guilty of too. But, when I find a piece like this, obviously painted with a skillfull hand, I feel frustrated not being able to put a name to it. Maybe it just adds to the intrigue of this piece.  On the back it says "Cliffs at Starndhagen- Arild". Arild is a coastal town about 30km above Helsingborg that attracts artists by the droves for its scenic views and many plein air painting opportunities. SOLD
